Argentina tops Honduras in World Cup tune-up

Argentina continued its World Cup preparation with a steady 2-0 win over Honduras at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas, in the team’s second-to-last friendly before the tournament begins.

Lautaro Martínez opened the scoring in the 37th minute, converting from the penalty spot after Nicolás Tagliafico was fouled in the box. Argentina doubled the lead early in the second half when Giuliano Simeone finished from close range in the 54th minute after a clever backheel setup from Martínez.

Lionel Messi did not feature as Argentina managed his workload while he recovers from muscle fatigue, but the defending World Cup champions still controlled the match and used the friendly to rotate the squad ahead of their final tune-up against Iceland. Argentina will open World Cup group play against Algeria on June 16.
